Sue Daniel
2024, Artist In Residence
Sue Daniel expresses emotion through paint; using vibrant oils she creates big, bold pieces on canvas – combining pure abstraction with surreal touches, always working to depict the underlying internal drama of emotion.
“Art is important to the well-being of my soul; through my art, I search to recognize and to express the wild thing I know is buried inside. I push every day on my journey to becoming freer, more open and accepting. Vibrations are flowing everywhere; I force myself to stop, listen and interpret.” As Modigliani put it so succinctly, “What I am seeking is not the real and not the unreal but rather the unconscious, the mystery of the instinctive in the human.”
Similarly, Sue believes that art should not be an experience solely of the eye, but should elicit an emotional response from the viewer. To create this emotionally charged experience Sue uses movement, form, marks and layered colour fields of lush, rich oils. Her paintings project a strong physical presence. Her colours and shapes leap off the canvas, lending a unique and identifiable quality to her work. Although fully abstract, her inspiration comes from the old masters for colour and motion, and is informed by the surrealists to create an emotional journey.
Artist's Statement
I favour the simple expression of the complex on large canvases. I use rich, bold colours and multi layered shapes that create a strong physical presence in my work. That presence is enhanced by rendering abstracted construction and shapes to provoke, challenge and evoke passion. The resulting works transform standard notions into uniquely expressive abstract forms influenced by the abstract expressionists of the New York School of the 1950’s.
“I aspire to create art that is not anything recognizable, not contrived, not anything describable, an abstract construction that just makes you feel.”
